Hex: Twin Heavens Dojo

The Dojo Hidden in the Mountains

pavillion

Twin Heavens dojo is tucked away high in the mountains on a path rarely traveled for its difficulty. The dojo is known as the finest school for learning the Ni Ten Ichi Ryu school of swordsmanship, which uses two blades simultaneously. The Master, Ogata Zenzou, hasn’t been training students for months. A prospective student, Jura, has been camping here and trying to convince the master to teach her.

Dojo Layout

Training hall A large open floor bordered by weapon racks with training swords. Straw dummies are pushed against one of the walls. Jura trains here, with no guidance from Master Ogata.

Resting quarters A long thin room with mats laid down for sleeping. 12 beds total, covered in dust.

Scroll Room Locked entrance. Contains a variety of scrolls explaining the Ni Ten Ichi Ryu style. The scrolls aren't rare on their own, but they have commentary written by Ogata. Worth 2,000 ryō total to a lord or wealthy samurai.

Master's Office Locked Entrance. A small office where Ogata sleeps. Very disorganized. There are 4 katanas in the room with scabbards that depict heavenly light breaking through clouds.

Shrine A small shrine to the spirit of the mountain. Ogata and Jura pay respects here daily.

NPCS

Master Ogata Zenzou

A bitter, angry old man. Ogata wears a wrinkled, stained kimono and smells of booze. He refuses to teach new students and demands visitors leave him alone, but he doesn't do anything to drive them off. He hasn't drawn his swords in weeks.

Ogata has been depressed ever since his greatest student, and adopted daughter, Ogata Otone, used his style to go on a killing spree with a katana he gifted her. Ogata Otone cut down any samurai she could find. She became known as the Whirling Demon and still hasn't been caught.

Ogata wants his student caught and killed but is ashamed to ask for help.

Jura

A stubborn young woman who refuses to leave Ogata alone. She sleeps in a tent outside the dojo and demands that he teach her the Ni Ten Ichi Ryu style every day. Jura realizes Ogata is depressed and has been taking care of him.

Jura knows why Ogata is depressed but does not think she has the skill to fight the Whirling Demon without Ogata's teaching. She will privately ask capable looking adventurers for help. She doesn't know where the demon is but does know her last murder victim was found south of Gerozato.

Jura used to be a Shrine Maiden in Gerozato, but hated how she was treated, and how crowds stared at her during her Kagura. She wants to become a Yahagi Samurai instead.

Resolution

If the party can show Ogata that the Whirling Demon is dead, he will offer them a Heavenly Katana, which is a +1 Katana that gives off 30' of light when drawn. He will also finally train Jura.
